Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams suggests Cole Kmet gave up on key play

The Chicago Bears had a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds remaining, but an interception from Caleb Williams to Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon sealed a defeat.

More News: Bears HC says Caleb Williams had other options before costly interception

The Bears were badly outplayed in a 14-3 first half, but Williams and the offense looked like they had better control in the second half. Unlike how Chicago had escaped with wins during much if its five-game winning streak, the costly turnover led to a 28-21 loss in front of 78,214 fans at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Following the game, Bears head coach Ben Johnson thought Williams had other options than tight end Cole Kmet.

During his postgame news conference, Williams suggested Kmet could have given more effort on what he called a “big boy ball” to tie the game up in a key moment.

We had about two or three guys in front either either tacking D’Andre Swift, or right there with Swift,” Williams said. And so, rolled out and saw Cole and tried to give him a big boy ball try and let him go up for it. Because I ended up seeing 25 starting to sprint.

“And so tried to try to slow him up and kind of give him a chance in those moments. It’s (a) got to have it moment. And they had a guy trailing me, and so didn’t feel that I could go get it myself. And so just got to give Cole a better, you know, a better shot at it. I think, you know, next time, just extend them a little bit more.”

Williams said in that pivotal moment he wanted to “trust” Kmet to go make a play.

Williams finished 19-of-35 for 186 yards, two touchdown and one interception. Kmet recorded two receptions for 42 yards.

Kmet only had 22 receptions for 273 yards and two touchdowns before Sunday’s contest. It’s fair to think the chemistry between Williams and the veteran tight end isn’t growing much this season, and what happened at the end of the game could limit the targets for Kmet going forward.
