Chicago Sky will have Angel Reese returning for her third season
The Chicago Sky and star forward Angel Reese have had a bit of a rocky relationship since she was drafted. The two-time All-Star was the seventh pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and joined the team as one of the most popular players. However, the relationship between player and franchise has been tumultuous to say the least. Let’s take a closer look at how Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky are feeling heading into the 2026 WNBA season.
The Chicago Sky and Angel Reese are looking to rebuild their relationship
While at Team USA’s training camp at Duke on Friday, Angel Reese gave a bit of an update about her WNBA future with the Chicago Sky.
“I’m under contract, so yes, I plan on returning to the Sky. (I’m) continuing to talk to (coach) Tyler (Marsh) and building that relationship with (general manager) Jeff (Pagliocca) and Tyler.”
Reese would struggle in her sophomore season compared to what she did as a rookie. She averaged 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks in 31.6 minutes per game. However, the shooting numbers failed to improve to numbers that are expected, as she posted a 45.8/18.2/75.6 shooting split as well.
Reese is one of four players who are under contract for next season at this point. However, the relationship between her and the team seemed to be at a turning point after some issues. In September, she publicly expressed her dissatisfaction with how the Chicago Sky has been. She cited the team being bereft of talent to be competitive and not having enough to attract significant free agents. She would apologize for the comments that hurt her teammates. As a result, the franchise would suspend her for half of a game for conduct detrimental to the team.
After the suspension, Reese would not play again and was listed with a back injury. She would reveal on Friday that she was “recovered at the end of the season, I was all good.” Reese has wanted to play with talented teammates and compete for championships. While the team has not gotten to that point, she appears willing to help them get to that point. It will be interesting to see if Reese and the Sky could repair this relationship or if it is too fractured to be fixed.
