Knee-Jerk Reactions: Ravens Extend DT Travis Jones for 3 Years, $40.5M
The Baltimore Ravens and defensive tackle Travis Jones agreed on a new contract this week. It’s for three years and $40.5 million, according to reports.
Terms update: Ravens are signing NT Travis Jones to a three-year, $40.5 million contract extension that ties him to Baltimore through the 2028 season. https://t.co/rFMhrEC3MR

Jones is a true wrecking ball on the interior defensive line. He’s perhaps one of the best mid-round picks the Ravens have made in the last few years and he’s being rewarded as such.
According to Jeff Zrebiec, Travis Jones was in a similar situation to Rashod Bateman, where an issue in the CBA would have made Jones a restricted free agent rather than an unrestricted one after this season. That quirk likely made this deal a little easier to hammer out.
Nnamdi Madubuike may never play football again after the neck injury he sustained in September, so that made retaining Jones all the more important.

A few years ago, I worked with a youth clinic for linemen that had both Travis Jones and Broderick Washington in attendance. They were both very personable and great to work with, and seeing Jones run drills up close gives you an idea of why he’s so beloved in that locker room and why his teammates and coaches speak so highly of his skill set. There are a lot of interior D-linemen that rely on size alone to get the job done, but his physicality in combination with his speed is really impressive, and I’d hate to be an O-lineman paired up against him for the day. He’ll wear you down all game and do it with a smile on his face.
TJ has put together a few strong seasons in a row, and this year, he’s doing it without Beeks at his side. Madubuike’s absence has definitely set that group back, and this contract may indicate that the Ravens believe they need to secure the interior of that line for the unfortunate scenario that 92 doesn’t return, but Jones’ performance in a vacuum has earned him this extension. He would have drawn a lot of money if he hit the open market, so I’m glad they were able to get this done without having to compete with other suitors.
The more extensions that the front office can get lined up, the more maneuverability the team might have for whatever remains of their contending window (assuming they can get Lamar’s extension inked). They’ve spent a lot of money on contracts recently, and I worry about ending up footing the bill in the future, but that’s a problem for another day.

I’m glad this got done. When talking about the impending Ravens FA, he was #1 on my list.
The CBA issue he had clearly helped make this deal a bit more team-friendly than I would have assumed. I’m glad the team was able to find a happy median there and get a deal that worked for both sides.
Jones has more pass rush upside too…just need to put some other real pass rushers on the edges to take some of the double teams off of him.
This could end up looking like a steal. As of now, it looks like a very good deal. Hard to see it being worse than that unless he has injury issues.
EDC was smart to move on an extension. 3 years is fair to Travis so he can re-enter the market quicker. And he gets paid more upfront than what he would have as an RFA.
Meanwhile you can still extend Jones again, if he keeps playing at a high level. #Ravens #RavensFlock https://t.co/wvi7mmx8qk

I think the Travis Jones extension was the most important one to lock up out of all the remaining free agents. I put it well above Tyler Linderbaum and Isaiah Likely even before the Mark Andrews extension. Now seeing that it’s only 13.5 million per year makes it an incredible deal for the Ravens. Travis will have an opportunity to hit free agency again while being in his prime and as long as he stays healthy he will earn significantly more the next time around. DeCosta has a lot of work to do this offseason but he’s getting a head start on some of the really important decisions. We know the Lamar negotiations won’t take place until the season is over.

Shout out to the NFLPA I guess. Thanks to a grievance Travis Jones is the next ravens player to get an extension that is insanely team friendly. He is only the 26th highest paid IDL in the NFL. Jones is a good player and right now the Ravens need as many good players as they can get on defense.
If Jones had won the grievance, he would have been an unrestricted FA in March. If he lost, he would have been a restricted FA and likely headed for the 2nd-round $6 million tender. That’s a moot point now and Jones, who the Ravens coaching staff loves, is signed through ‘28.
