Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman announces decision on New York Giants
On Wednesday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman confirmed his plans for 2026 after he addressed his potential candidacy for the New York Giants.

During an interview with the New York Post on Tuesday, Freeman called the prestige of the Giants “tremendous” before crediting his Fighting Irish players for making it possible for him to be a candidate for the league.
“The gratitude you have, for one, even being mentioned by an organization like that,” Freeman said, via the New York Post. “I got a lot of respect for all NFL teams, but the history of the Giants is tremendous. But it’s gratitude for me, it reminds me of the honor that I have to be in the position I have.
“And I’ve said that before. I use that to remind myself of the gratitude that I have for this position because you wouldn’t have said that statement if I didn’t have this job and we weren’t having success.”

During an appearance on NBC’s the “Today” show, Freeman was asked if he’d “stay put” with ND for 2026.

While the Giants might be a prestigious job based on its history, former head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joel Schoen did plenty of damage to organization in recent years. New York is 2-11 after a 33-15 loss to the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football.”
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s future health is a concern, as he takes many hits that can lead to concussions. First-round pick Abdul Carter has seen the bench in recent weeks due to disciplinary issues.
Notre Dame is a more attractive long-term option
The Giants aren’t a good landing spot for Freeman, who has a chance to build a dynasty at Notre Dame.
On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff selection committee dropped the Irish to No. 10 in the rankings. ND is on the bubble before No. 9 Alabama plays No. 3 Georgia in the SEC championship and No. 11 BYU takes on No. 4 Texas Tech in the Big 12 championship.
If Alabama and BYU win, the Irish are likely out.
Freeman’s team is in purgatory waiting. Despite not being a lock for a chance to play for a national title this year, that remains the goal of the head coach.
The NFL can wait.
