Chicago Bears coach Al Harris set to interview for 2nd defensive coordinator opening

inThe Chicago Bears had one of the best defensive secondaries in the NFL this past season, leading the league in interceptions with 23. It should come as no surprise, then, that their secondary coach, Al Harris, is getting looked at by multiple teams for their open defensive coordinator positions.

Indeed, 10 different NFL teams moved on from their head coaches this offseason, and more fired or did not renew the contracts of their defensive coordinators. This has caused multiple jobs to open, and Harris is clearly an intriguing candidate.

So far this offseason, Harris has interviewed for the open defensive coordinator position with the Green Bay Packers. Of course, he played for them during his playing career and made two Pro Bowls. He is also a member of the Packers Hall of Fame.

However, as the Packers are supposedly waiting to make a decision on who they will hire until they can speak to Denver Broncos assistant head coach Jim Leonhard, Harris is getting other opportunities to interview elsewhere.

Recently, it was reported that he will speak to the Tennessee Titans regarding their open defensive coordinator position:

Harris began his coaching career immediately after his playing days ended following the 2011 season. In 2012, he was hired as a coaching intern by the Kansas City Chiefs. By 2018, he had worked his way up to being their secondary coach.

After a year coaching on the college level, he was hired by his former head coach with the Packers, Mike McCarthy, to be the secondary coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. Then, in 2024, he was promoted to assistant head coach.

Following McCarthy’s departure in Dallas, Harris was hired by Chicago’s first-year head coach, Ben Johnson, to be his secondary coach.
