Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson hates losing.

In Week 18, Johnson was willing to risk injury to avoid a two-game losing streak heading into the postseason, choosing to play his starters against the Detroit Lions after suffering a heartbreaking 42-38 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.

Frankly, his players didn’t respond well to Johnson’s message. The team came out flat, trailing the Lions 13-0 at halftime before losing 19-16 at Soldier Field.

Because the Philadelphia Eagles rested their starters and lost the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Chicago was still able to clinch the NFC’s No. 2 seed.

Despite this being his first season, Johnson has no intentions of being happy with winning the NFC North and participating in the playoffs. He isn’t thinking about maybe beating a shorthanded Green Bay Packers squad on Saturday and exiting against tougher competition in the divisional round.

Johnson is thinking about February’s Super Bowl and a chance to win another important game at Levi’s Stadium.

Per Adam Jahns of CHGO Sports, rookie tight end Colston Loveland told reporters Johnson warned players not to come to practice if they had any offseason distractions on their minds. He wants Chicago focused on winning in the playoffs.

“After the (Lions) game, he said, if you’re not prepared to play the next five weeks or if you’re thinking about anything else – thinking about booking a flight, vacations or anything – don’t come in,” Loveland said. “He made it very clear about what’s at stake and what this team is looking for.”

The Bears have not won a playoff game since the 2010 season. Their last home playoff game ended in a double-doink loss to the Eagles. Chicago last played in a postseason game in 2020 when it lost to the New Orleans Saints.

Johnson’s ready to change the narrative in Year 1.
