Chicago Bears HC gives cautious update on Rome Odunze, Kyler Gordon

Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze (15) celebrates after the game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

Earlier this week, the Chicago Bears hinted at the return of cornerback Kyler Gordon and wide receiver Rome Odunze for their wild-card matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.

Odunze (foot) has been out since the Bears beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 on Black Friday. At the time, he led the Bears in receiving with 661 yards and six touchdowns. He was made active for the Bears’ contest against the Cleveland Browns in Week 15, but suffered a setback in warmups.

Gordon has only played in three games this season, with his last appearance also coming against the Eagles. He was placed on injured reserve after the contest.

Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Bears head coach Ben Johnson had a cautious update for Gordon and Odunze before Saturday night’s game. Chicago expects them to take the field, but it’s unclear how much of a role they’ll have against Green Bay until the team knows they’re back to full health.

“He looked good yesterday,” Johnson said of Gordon. “We’ll see what it looks like again today both him and Rome, you know. It’s good to have them both back out there. They’re excited. They’re moving around well and we’ll see if they can help us out this weekend.”

Johnson’s comments didn’t confirm Odunze and Gordon would play against the Packers. But they appear tone trending toward making an appearance for the wild-card game at Soldier Field.

Chicago’s defense struggled against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 and in the first half against the Detroit Lions. The Bears would be much better off with Gordon in the secondary for the postseason.

Adding Odunze to strong receiving corps would be icing on the cake for second-year quarterback Caleb Williams.

Per the Bears’ injury report released on Thursday, Odunze has no destination against the Packers. Gordon is listed as questionable to play.
