Chicago Bears legend says the Green Bay Packers are the best organization he ever played with

The Chicago Bears, for years, have been criticized by many, even their own fans, for how they run their organization. Fortunately, they silenced many of their haters by going 11-6 in 2025 and winning the NFC North. What is more, they went 1-1 against their hated rivals, the Green Bay Packers, during the regular season. Chicago also sent Green Bay home in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs with a thrilling 31-27 victory.

However, their recent success does not erase the mistakes of the past. Indeed, after winning the Super Bowl in 1985, they have only made it back to the title game once and have struggled to maintain high levels of success from year to year.

A great deal of their historical disappointments have been because of the ownership making bad hires in the front office. And one of the Bears’ greatest players, Jim McMahon, does not consider them to be the best organization with whom he played during his career in the NFL.

McMahon, of course, began his career with the Bears after being selected by them in the first round (fifth overall pick) in the 1982 NFL Draft. And while it was the Bears’ dominant defense that led them to victory in Super Bowl XX, McMahon was the face of the team and became a cultural icon in Chicago.

After his days with the Bears were over, McMahon bounced around the NFL, spending time with the San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, and Packers.

And it is the Packers, he says, who were the best organization:

“They asked me what was the best organization I ever played for. Green Bay was. It wasn’t even a thought. From the Equipment Manager to … the President,” McMahon said.

“The town owns the team. It was just a unique experience to be up there and be in that Packer land. They treated me well. I mean, they don’t like you when you’re not a Packer, but when you are a Packer they treat you as their own. It was a very interesting year and a half that I was there.”

But while McMahon may think the Packers are the better organization, that did not stop him from wearing his Bears jersey to the White House after Green Bay won Super Bowl XXXI.
