Harbaugh Says “Thanks” Ravens Fans
I shared my views on John Harbaugh’s dissing of GM Eric DeCosta, Dick Cass and the Ravens fans during his introductory presser as the head coach of the New York Giants. I heard from many of you.
“Let it go!”
“Not our problem anymore!”
“You’re acting like a jilted lover!”
“John Harbaugh was and is a class act. Unfortunately, Tony your article is not.”
Fair enough. Harbaugh’s dismissal is a win for both the coach and the franchise. The focus should be upon the next head coach and the future of the Ravens. Who can come to Baltimore, get more from a talented roster and unleash its potential?
But just as I’m about to get there, to put the “Who’s got it better than us?” era behind me, I put myself in the crosshairs of another John Harbaugh presser and they bring me right back in.
And then there’s the comment that represents that humiliating kick in the crotch:
“Why do you care so much, Tony?”
Maybe I care because I defended John for so many years when things weren’t going well. Maybe I care because I shared my opinions on John with the world – that he’s a decent man and largely responsible for grooming the Ravens culture. Maybe because of all this, I feel betrayed. I thought he was better than his press conference in New York. He had two chances to thank Ravens fans the way Sean McDermott thanked Bills fans after his dismissal. He chose not to. That was not an accident. It was as amateurish as the “guy at the end of the bar” that John is also quick to dismiss.
Today I read on Drew Forrester’s, Drew’s Morning Dish that he reached out to John to inquire about his relationship with Ravens fans. Drew has a long-standing relationship with John built upon mutual respect. Here’s what Harbaugh shared with Drew:
“A full and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the fans and friends of the Flock who were wonderful for 18 years. We loved every conversation and every moment with every fan. It was always uplifting, and we are grateful for their support and enthusiasm. We had so many amazing moments together. We will always love Baltimore and all the people who make it special.” John and Ingrid Harbaugh
So there you have it. A response from Harbaugh about the fans of Baltimore, coaxed out of him by a friend.
And I feel no better.
This isn’t a knock on Drew, but instead, an indictment upon Harbaugh. Now I have closure. Now I don’t care. Now I just see all the pomp and circumstance of his corny presser as nothing but phony. I have a friend who has called John, “Fraudbaugh” for years. Now I’m embarrassed that I didn’t see it sooner.
But back to Drew’s piece…
In “Harbaugh Speaks to Baltimore”, Drew shares that he expects the Harbaugh Family to take out a newspaper ad, presumably in The Sun, to issue an expansive “thank you” to the city. Too late John. Save your money or maybe donate it to a charity instead.
But thanks Drew. Your article today gave me the closure I needed.
