Chicago Bears coach sends message to front office before free agency
The Chicago Bears brass was at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this week to check out incoming players for the 2026 draft.

General manager Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson won the NFC North and made the Divisional Round in January with a young roster. This offseason, the Bears will try to elevate the roster to get the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams’ rookie contract.
Because of the Bears’ success in 2025, Poles is not set to make a selection on draft night until No. 25. Chicago has needs at running back, left tackle, defensive line, linebacker, and safety.
Earlier this week, Poles told reporters that Ozzy Trapilo is not expected to play for most of the upcoming season due to the knee injury he suffered in the wild-card round.
With Braxton Jones set to head to free agency, left tackle should be a priority for Chicago unless the team believes Theo Benedet is ready for the job. He wasn’t in the Divisional Round.
During a recent appearance on left tackle Terron Armstead’s podcast “The Set” this week, Bears offensive line coach Dan Roushar argued that the No. 25 pick won’t be high enough to find a Day 1 starter at left tackle. He suggested the front office should look at adding a left tackle in free agency.
“It’s most likely either through free agency or it’s here in the building,” Roushar said, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Roushar doesn’t believe Chicago has the draft capital or an asset to make a move for an elite Day 1 draft pick at left tackle.

Roushar isn’t sure any of his current offensive linemen can play the position well in Week 1.
“I know what the left tackle position looks like in this league,” Roushar said. “(Armstead is) the standard. That’s a rare player that comes along. But somebody has to play that position similar to that. It’s a faceless, nameless guy right now.
“Is that player in the building? There’s guys that have traits, but not consistent enough… So that’s to be determined.”
The Bears will certainly do their best to help Benedet become more consistent. But Poles might have to pay for a player that can defend Williams’ blindside.
As we saw with the New England Patriots and Will Campbell in the Super Bowl, left tackle can have a crucial impact on a big game.
