Chicago Cubs: Nico Hoerner named as trade target of AL contender ahead of 2026 Opening Day
The Chicago Cubs are busily preparing for the 2026 MLB season as Spring Training is under way. Over the course of the last several months, they have built a roster that, hopefully, will lead them to a World Series title. But even with all the excitement, there is a cloud of uncertainty.
Nico Hoerner, a two-time Gold Glove winner at second base, is entering the final year of his contract. Of course, many fans would love to see him extended so that he will remain in Chicago for many years. And while this could happen, it is also possible that he chooses to sign for more money elsewhere when he hits free agency.
To that end, there are some who believe the Cubs should trade him before that happens.
Chicago Cubs star Nico Hoerner named top trade target of the Boston Red Sox
In a recent article in which they list one trade each MLB team should make before Opening Day, Bleacher Report urged the Boston Red Sox to call the Cubs about Hoerner:
“The Red Sox were actually linked to Paredes here and there at points during the offseason, but their trade for Caleb Durbin solidified their preference for run prevention over power.
“If they’re going to lean even further into it, Hoerner should be their next target. He’s a two-time Gold Glover at second base, where his arrival would give Boston plus defenders at three out of four infield spots.”
Obviously, this is an idea that makes all the sense in the world for the Red Sox, but not so much for the Cubs. Moving Hoerner would give Matt Shaw a home, but the question, as always, is what would Chicago get in return?
Despite being in the final year of his contract, Hoerner would have a high price on the trade market. Since the Red Sox already traded away some of their more valuable assets, they may not have the pieces the Cubs would want in return.
At the end of the day, though, what would really be best for Chicago is to extend Hoerner and keep him around for the ling-term.
