Chicago Bears Pro Bowler gets real on his future as free agency looms
The Chicago Bears have some daunting and difficult decisions to make when NFL free agency begins in earnest next month.
Just in the secondary, alone, safeties C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Jaquan Brisker, and Kevin Byard are all set to hit the open market, unless Chicago and general manager Ryan Poles are able to strike a deal to keep some combination of the veteran safeties in Bears uniforms for 2026 and beyond.
Then, there’s the matter of one of the Bears’ top cornerbacks and an emerging star who could command a robust market.
Nahshon Wright Wright opens up about Chicago Bears future
Nahshon Wright Wright was one of the Bears’ brightest bright spots and emergent stars in 2025, intercepting a career-high five passes and posting a career-high 54 total tackles, showing what he’s capable of in an expanded role, en-route to being selected to the Pro Bowl.
Monday in Santa Clara, the site of this year’s Pro Bowl games, Wright opened up about his desire to return to the Bears, and to coordinator Dennis Allen’s defense.
“I definitely would love to be back in Chicago, but who knows,” Wright said, according to Mark Carman of CHGO_Bears. “We’ll see.”
There aren’t many easy answers for Poles and the Bears, who are currently projected to open the offseason roughly $10.6 million over the cap.
However, Wright is coming off the strongest season of his career, seems to have carved out a meaningful role in Allen’s defense, and could just be one of the players that Poles and the Bears prioritize keeping around in 2026 and beyond.
