Chicago Cubs: Nico Hoerner listed as 3rd best second baseman in MLB

The Chicago Cubs have multiple players on their roster who could be considered among the best players at their respective positions. One of these is second baseman Nico Hoerner, who is a two-time Gold Glove winner at the position. While he does not hit for power, Hoerner had his best offensive season in 2025 and is a serious threat to steal bases.

Every year, it seems, Hoerner is in the conversation for best second basemen in baseball. And while many Cubs fans may feel that he is the absolute best, some disagree. In fact, one baseball analyst listed him as just the third-best second baseman in the game.

In 2025, Hoerner hit .297/.345/.394 with seven home runs, 63 RBI, and 29 stolen bases. He also won his second career Gold Glove award and finished 19th in NL MVP voting.

Despite this, though, Bleacher Report ranked him as just the third-best second baseman in the game:

“Cristopher Sánchez, Shohei Ohtani, Paul Skenes, and Geraldo Perdomo. That’s a full list of all the NL players who finished with a higher WAR total than Hoerner last season, with $765 million man Juan Soto matching his 6.2 mark. His value is built on elite defense and disruptive speed, but a healthy .333/.375/.467 line in September suggests there might also still be another level offensively.”

Brice Turang of the Milwaukee Brewers was second, one place ahead of Hoerner. Ketel Marte, who has won the last two Silver Slugger awards for second base, was named as the best one in Major League Baseball.

Turang, who won the Platinum Glove in the National League in 2024, had a lower batting average than Hoerner, but hit more home runs and drove in more runs. Marte, well, is a perennial MVP candidate. Their spaces above Hoerner on the list may be understandable, but he could very well overtake Turang in the minds of many with a stellar campaign in 2026.
