Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is gaining attention not just for his throws, but also for his colorful nails. As he begins his NFL career, his nail art continues to draw national attention. The designs he chooses sometimes carry personal meaning beyond simple style.

The 24-year-old athlete’s love for nail art began at home. He grew up with a mother, a professional nail technician, who often painted his nails. The mother-son manicure-fueled bond was showcased in a 2023 Dr. Pepper Strawberries & Cream commercial. In the ad, his mother, Dayna Price, beams as he sports a maroon-and-white “I Heart Dr. Pepper” manicure. 

What began as a fun family activity in his teens grew into a signature part of his identity. During his college career at USC, Williams frequently used his nails to send messages before games. He displayed motivational phrases, references to upcoming opponents, and tributes to charitable causes. 

The football standout continues the tradition with the Bears. For his 2024 NFL debut, he sported bright orange and white nails with his jersey number on them. In a September 2025 game, Williams painted “988” and suicide prevention ribbons on his nails. He chose this design to raise awareness of mental health.

Williams is painting his nails in various colors, including pink, as a form of personal expression. However, not everyone approves. The Bears star has faced criticism for challenging traditional ideas of masculinity in football. 

Many people expect male athletes, especially NFL quarterbacks, to maintain a conventional appearance. Critics have called his nails unprofessional or distracting, even though they do not affect his performance. Some fans have mocked and questioned his choice.

During a recent appearance on “The Rush Podcast” with Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby, Williams addressed the buzz surrounding his custom nails. He said that despite criticism, he isn’t changing his now-signature look and will continue painting his nails.

“I know who I am… I’m going to keep doing it. It’s unique to me,” he noted. “It’s just gel on my nails… People feel a certain way about it in a masculine sport. I give no [expletive]… I could care less.”

NFL rules prevent players from writing messages on uniforms or tape, so Williams uses his manicure as an alternative outlet.

“You can’t write stuff on your tape,” he said. 

The quarterback added that he enjoys being creative and sometimes a bit of trolling. He laughed, saying, “I enjoy trolling,” but admitted he’s more mindful about it these days.

For Williams, the message is clear: he values self-expression and has no plans to stop this unique personal tradition.
