Iowa Hawkeyes coach Jan Jensen has earned a spot on the 2026 Werner Ladder Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year watch list. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark was among the first to react to the announcement.

Before joining the WNBA, Clark became a college basketball star with the Hawkeyes. From 2020 to 2024, Clark led Iowa to two national championship games. She also set the NCAA all-time scoring record with 3,951 points. She became one of college basketball’s most prolific scorers.

Her success came under head coach Lisa Bluder and Jensen, who was an assistant coach at the time. After Clark joined the Indiana Fever in 2024, Bluder retired following 24 years of coaching. Jensen succeeded Bluder as head coach. Clark always credited the Iowa coaching staff for believing in her early on.

Jensen is only in her second season as Iowa’s head coach, but her tenure has already been marked by several significant milestones.

In her first season as head coach, Jensen led the team to a 23-11 record. Although they were eliminated before reaching the championship, the Hawkeyes advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The 57-year-old coach has kept Iowa winning in her second season. The Hawkeyes have a 21-5 record following Thursday’s victory over the Purdue Boilermakers. The team is now riding a three-game winning streak after defeating the Washington Huskies, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Purdue.

Jensen also guided the Hawkeyes to an 11-3 mark in Big Ten play and six wins over AP Top 25 opponents. Ranked No. 13, Iowa is performing strongly this season.

By winning 20-plus games in each of her first two seasons, Jensen set a program milestone. She became the first Iowa women’s basketball coach to achieve this feat. This accomplishment secured her a spot on the 2026 Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year watch list.

Caitlin Clark reacts to former coach’s milestone with one-word message

On Friday, the Naismith Awards announced via X: “Jensen is in the history books!”

It added: “@goiowa has officially stamped her name in @IowaWBB history as the first head coach to secure over 20 wins in her first two seasons… The future is bright for Jensen, a member of our 2026 Werner Ladder Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year Watch List!”

Clark immediately reacted to her former coach’s achievement. The 24-year-old WNBA sensation summed up the milestone in one word: “Aura.” The brief but resounding reaction highlighted Clark’s admiration for the coach’s leadership.

With her inclusion in the prestigious watch list, Jensen is officially among this season’s elite head coaches. The list will be narrowed to four before the final winner is announced. The Naismith award honors the most outstanding women’s basketball coach for exceptional on-court success.
