Potential Chicago Bears cap casualty D’Andre Swift makes strong sales pitch
The Chicago Bears‘ offense became a running back by committee approach the longer last season went on, in head coach Ben Johnson’s first at the helm.
Veteran D’Andre Swift and emergent seventh-round rookie running back D’Andre Swift combined to power Chicago’s ground game to finish third in the league, while averaging 144.5 rushing yards per game.
However, as the Bears begin this offseason upwards of $5 million over the salary cap, Swift’s Chicago future is a bit uncertain ahead of the 2026 campaign.

As general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears look to find ways to clear up some cap space before the new league year begins, cutting Swift would seemingly be a legitimate possibility.
Given that the Bears could create $7.4 million in new cap space, while triggering a $1.3 million dead money charge by releasing Swift.
After a strong 2025 campaign, Swift says he hopes to be back in a Bears uniform next fall.
“I have no idea, but hopefully I did enough for them to want me back because I know I don’t want to go anywhere else,” Swift told the Chicago Sun-Times. “I hope it plays itself out that way. I love the city, I love the coaching staff and the men that I work with. That’s out of my control, but if I had it my way, I’d be back. I don’t want to play nowhere else.”
Swift surpassed 1,000 yards for the second time in his career, while rushing for a career-high nine touchdowns last season, clearly finding an explosive home in Ben Johnson’s system.
Coming off a career year, Swift has certainly held up his end of the bargain on the field. Now, the ball is in the front office’s court to determine if they can afford to keep a 1,000-yard rusher in the fold, or if the $7.4 million in potential cap savings is simply too significant to pass up.
