Chicago Bears’ chances to trade for Raiders’ Maxx Crosby take costly hit

Maxx Crosby, Chicago Bears

Last week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter argued it was a “fantasy” to suggest Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby could be traded to the Chicago Bears because of the team’s cap situation.

“The Bears don’t have the money to make a move like that right now,” Schefter said.
“They cannot afford it.”

David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 responded to Schefter’s report, claiming that Chicago could make a trade for Crosby if general manager Ryan Poles wants to make that move.

“So there is an uproar after Adam Schefter said the Bears are broke,” Kaplan posted on X. “Relax. After making calls here’s the scoop. That was in reference to salary cap situation. They have whatever they need financially if Poles wants to make a move. We will discuss on @ESPN1000 Monday at 6 a.m.”

The Bears had just over $1.4 million in cap space on Saturday. After adding players, that number has decreased significantly. Chicago signed defensive tackle James Lynch on Wednesday.

Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Bears have $213,000 remaining to play with before they have to sign players in the draft.

That’s over $4 million less cap space than the NFL team with the second-tightest cap, the Carolina Panthers, who have $4.75 million.

Can the Chicago Bears afford a player like Maxx Crosby?

The Bears will obviously have to make some restructures, make another trade or cut some players to add money to the cap before the draft.

Chicago would have to make some serious moves if it wanted to trade for a playmaker like Crosby.

The Bears didn’t make many splashy moves in free agency to add star power. They played it safe, adding quality players to numerous positions while letting four safeties and cornerback Nashon Wright exit in free agency.

After making the NFC Divisional Round last year, the Bears think their roster is close to being able to win a Super Bowl. Still, the team needs a star or two if they want to keep pace with the Los Angeles Rams, who beat them in the playoffs.
