Chicago Cubs: Carson Kelly gets low ranking among 2026 MLB starting catchers
The Chicago Cubs boast a roster of many young players that are considered to be among the best at their various positions. Indeed, six Cubs players were recently included on ESPN’s list of the top 100 players in Major League Baseball.
There is also excitement around top prospect Moises Ballesteros, who is expected to start the year with Major League club. The catcher/first baseman has nothing left to prove in the minors, at least with his bat.
That being said, he is expected to primarily be Chicago’s designated hitter as Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya are ahead of him defensively at catcher.

It may only be a matter of time, though, before Ballesteros takes over at catcher. While Kelly started 105 of his 111 games there last year, he is a career journeyman for a reason. Bleacher Report just ranked him as the 17th-best catcher in Major League Baseball. There are 30 MLB teams:
Offense: 421 PA, 119 OPS+, .249/.333/.428, 31 XBH (17 HR), 50 RBI
Defense: 864.0 INN, 4 DRS, -4.2 FRM, 23/67 CS
WAR: 3.6
“The Cubs signed Kelly to a two-year, $11.5 million deal last offseason, and he filled a bigger role than expected when injuries limited Miguel Amaya to just 28 games. He set career-high marks in hits (92), home runs (17), RBIs (50), and WAR (3.6), though much of that damage came during the first half when he logged an .899 OPS and 12 homers in 62 games.”
Kelly is entering the final year of his contract, and will Ballesteros ready for the Majors, it is more than likely that this will be his final season in Chicago.
