Bears GM Drops Concerning Comments After First Round of NFL Draft

Ryan Poles, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles put together a strong first round 2026 NFL Draft performance. When all was said and done, they were able to land Oregon standout safety Dillon Thieneman to shore up the defensive secondary.

Thieneman dropping to the No. 25 overall pick was a surprise. No one expected him to be on the board for the Bears to take. Now, there are other needs Chicago needs to focus on throughout the remainder of the draft.

Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, the Bears had a clear need on the defensive line. They need more pass rushing in order to become an elite defense. However, recent comments from Poles bring up a reason to be concerned about Chicago’s draft plans.

Following the first round, Poles delivered some concerning comments about the team’s current roster.

Bears Fans Will Be Concerned About Ryan Poles’ Latest Comments

Poles spoke out about the defensive line and pass rush needs for the Bears. He doesn’t seem overly concerned with the idea of quarterback’s having more time to throw the football against his secondary.

“The [defensive] line helps the back end more often than not,” Poles said. “In this situation, we have good corners and good safeties. We can be in a position where we can have the [opposing] quarterback hold the ball a little longer.”

At the end of the day, those comments are downright wrong. Even with a quality secondary, NFL quarterbacks can pick apart a defense with no pressure. Poles has a philosophy that has been proven wrong time and time again.

Hopefully, these comments are just a smokescreen about what Chicago will do in the second round. Poles has two second-round picks to work with due to the D.J. Moore trade with the Buffalo Bills. If the Bears want to become an elite defense, they’ll need to find a way to improve the pass rush.

Should Poles actually believe in what he said, Chicago could be in trouble. No secondary is immune to giving up big production if it can’t get to the quarterback. As currently constructed, the Bears’ defense is going to struggle to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

All of that being said, the second round and third round will occur on Friday night. It will be interesting to see if Chicago adds pass rushing help tonight.
