Further compounding the situation, Mendoza doubled down on his reasoning, explaining, “In that spot, especially with Nico Hoerner, if you put him on first, they’re likely taking second. You know it’s a contact situation, but then you’ve got some of their best hitters coming up.”
This explanation suggests Mendoza was primarily concerned about Hoerner advancing to second, not just because it would put another runner in scoring position, but because it would eliminate the possibility of a double play. Even so, that scenario would still require execution, and there remained a chance the inning could have been decided earlier, whether by Busch or Alex Bregman, who was on deck and also off to a slow start, before any potential steal even came into play.
All of this only adds to the growing pressure on Mendoza. With the New York Mets now mired in an 11-game skid, scrutiny was already mounting, but his explanation for pitching to Hoerner has only intensified it. When results aren’t there, decisions get dissected, and in this case, Mendoza’s reasoning did little to quiet the noise. Instead, it’s pushed him further onto the hot seat, with fans and analysts alike questioning not just the outcome, but the process behind it.
