Chicago Bears get honest with Tyrique Stevenson before draft
The Chicago Bears don’t have too big of a need at cornerback before the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Bears are hoping Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson will return to full health for the upcoming season. Bears head coach Ben Johnson expects those two players to stay on the field and be much bigger contributors in 2026.
The Bears do need help in the secondary, and assistant general manager Jeff King suggested the team could use a draft pick at safety as they lean on newly acquired free agent Coby Bryant.
During his news conference on Tuesday, King commented on cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, set to play on the final season of his rookie contract. Stevenson has had his fair share of controversy in Chicago, but King said the Bears aren’t giving up on the 2023 second-round pick just yet.
“Tyrique’s no different than every young player in this league,” King said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “He’s had ups. He’s had his moments of downs. It’s our charge to help him through those. He’s made some great plays.”
The Bears traded up to land Stevenson in 2023. He’s appeared in 45 games and made 40 starts.
King thinks Stevenson is in good shape at OTAs to start in April.

“We’re never going to put a ceiling on a guy’s upside. We’re not going to put Tyrique in a box and say, ‘You’re going to be this.’ He’s still growing. He’s still learning,” King said.
“He’s shown those flashes of being a great player, and we have a lot of hope that through this offseason that he’s going to get there. We saw him in the building yesterday. He looks great. He’s done a really good job this spring of getting in shape.”
It’s a pivotal offseason for Stevenson, set to become a free agent in 2027. Based on his history with the Bears, the team will wait until the start of the next offseason to offer him a contract. He’s going to have to show his worth on and off the field to the Bears.
