Chicago Bears receive strong grade for Sam Roush selection

The Chicago Bears made a lot of people scratch their heads with the selection of tight end Sam Roush with the 69th pick. Now, the Bears have three quality tight ends, and that is leaving fans questioning the fit on the roster. One outlet gave a grade for the pick following Day 2 of the NFL Draft. Let’s take a closer look at what the grade was and the rationale behind it.

Bleacher Report gives the Chicago Bears a B grade for the Sam Roush selection

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski wrote an article giving a grade for each Day 2 draft pick. He seemingly was excited with the pick, giving the Bears a ‘B’ grade. Below is the reasoning he gave about the team selecting another tight end.

“The Chicago Bears’ offense will befascinatiing with all the tight end talent currently found on its roster. Last year’s first-round pick, Colston Loveland, led the team in receiving yards last year. Veteran Cole Kmet is a viable veteran who can play in line and serve as a legitimate target. Now, the Bears add Sam Roush, whose upside is immense. He is the future of Chicago’s Y-tight end in 12 personnel.”

Sobleski would continue and further explain how Roush will be an elite playmaker in the passing game.

“The incoming prospect is the class’s best blocking tight end. He fires off the ball low, with a flat back and drives through defenders. His real potential lies in the pass game. Stanford didn’t have the caliber of quarterback play to fully feature a tight end with Roush’s athletic prowess. In fact, the 6’6″, 270-pound player posted a top-10 relative athletic score among the last 40 draft classes. Roush has a high floor thanks to his in-line capabilities and a sky-high ceiling if his pass-game potential is unlocked.”

Roush had a strong showing in his four seasons with the Stanford Cardinal. He finished with 119 receptions for 1,201 yards (10.1 yards per catch) and four receiving touchdowns. As a result, he can be a strong pass-catcher coming off the bench or make someone like Kmet more expendable for pass-rushing help. It will be intriguing to see how Roush’s addition makes the Bears look in 2026 and beyond.
