Chicago Cubs promote #14 Cole Mathis to high-A after stellar start to 2026 season
The Chicago Cubs are 12-9, but tied for last place in the National League Central Division. Indeed, the first several weeks of the 2026 season have indicated that the NL Central is going to be a dog-fight. Going into the season, many assumed the Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers would be the top two teams in the division again. To the surprise of many, all five teams are currently over .500. The tough Cincinnati Reds, who made the playoffs last year as a Wild Card, are leading the way.
If the first 20+ games of 2026 are any indication, each team in NL Central is going to be competitive all year long. What is more, all five teams also have strong farm systems, which indicates it could be this way for years to come.
Focusing on Chicago, one prospect earned a very early promotion after his incredible start down in Low-A.
The Chicago Cubs promote Cole Mathis to High-A
Cole Mathis is Chicago’s fourteenth overall prospect, a former pitcher who now plays first base and third base, is off to a hot start this year. After missing much of the 2025 season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, Mathis hit just .215/.336/.402 with three home runs and 14 RBI (29 games). This year, though, he is putting the organization on notice.
Through the first 14 games he has played at Low-A this year, Mathis is hitting .294/.439/.765 with seven home runs, 17 RBI, and three stolen bases.

Still a couple of years away from the Majors, Mathis certainly has shown that he is capable of moving up past Chicago’s initial minor league team. If he can continue hitting at high-A, a late-season promotion to Double-A is not out of the question.
