Chicago Cubs receive disappointing grade 20 games through 2026 season

Chicago Cubs, Pete Crow-Armstrong

The Chicago Cubs were many fans’ and analysts’ pick to not only win the National League Central Division in 2026, but also advance to the World Series. Unfortunately, they have not gotten off to a very good start through the season’s first 19 games.

While Chicago is currently 10-9, one game above .500, they in last place in the division. Of course, they have 143 games left to play, but early season injuries, some of which are significant, present them with hurdles that will be difficult to overcome as the year progresses.

Additionally, a couple of their most important offensive players from a year ago simply are not producing yet.

The Chicago Cubs get a D+ in early season grading

Bleacher Report recently published an article in which they gave each MLB a letter grade for their performances through the first several weeks of the season. As discussed, the Cubs have not lived up to expectations so far this year, and the D+ they received reflect that:

“The Cubs have already lost Cade Horton for the year, Justin Steele won’t be back until at least Memorial Day and the combo of Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch which carried this offense in 2025 has been woeful through these first 18 games. They’ve won five of their last eight, though, including pummeling the Phillies in back-to-back games. The NL Central’s preseason favorites have been a disappointment at .500, but they are starting to come to life.”

Cubs fans are well-aware of the pitching woes the team has had so far this season. Injuries certainly have not helped.

It is rather frustrating, though, that both Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch are off to such slow starts. PCA also cooled off considerably in the second half of last season, so his struggles to start the year have raised some eyebrows (especially in light of his $115 million contract extension).

Not mentioned above is the absolute dreadful start of $175 million third baseman Alex Bregman, who was signed as a free agent this past off-season.

Several players need to turn their performances around quick in order for Chicago to keep pace in the division.
