Chicago Cubs: Pete Crow-Armstrong named one of the most “over-hyped” stars in MLB

Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago Cubs

Last season, Chicago Cubs centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong enjoyed a breakout year. He hit .247/.287/.481 with 31 home runs, 95 RBI, and 35 stolen bases. He was the first Cubs player since Sammy Sosa to post a 30-30 season, and quickly became one of the faces of Chicago sports.

Not only did Crow-Armstrong perform well, overall, at the plate, but he also was otherworldly on defense. He won the National League Gold Glove for centerfield and was named an All-Star for the first time in his career.

Earlier this year, the Cubs gave Crow-Armstrong a six-year $115 million contract extension despite the fact that he had multiple years of club control remaining. However, they felt it a good investment as it locks him into Chicago at a reasonable price for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, Crow-Armstrong struggled in the second half of the season last year and is not off to a good start in 2026. Through 19 games played, he is hitting just .227/.275/.293 with a home run and five RBI. Most concerning, he has struck out 24 times and has drawn just four walks.

His poor start has Bleacher Report declaring him one of the most over-hyped stars in Major League Baseball:

“His 31-homer, 35-steal stat line last year helped mask an ugly .287 on-base percentage and a middling 4.5 percent walk rate. That extremely aggressive approach is being exploited this year, as his 49.3 percent chase rate is among the worst in baseball and he has a .202 expected batting average. His elite defense and speed will always give him a high value floor, but he might be more Kevin Kiermaier than Carlos Beltrán.”

Crow-Armstrong is still young and has plenty of time to improve at the plate. That being said, as he will be making $22 million a year for five years starting in 2027, he needs to figure it out quickly in order to be worth what the Cubs are going to pay him.
