Chicago Bears take critical step for stadium project in Indiana
The Chicago Bears are on the clock as the Illinois legislature continues to bide its time to pass legislation that would aid the team in building a new stadium in Arlington Heights.

The Bears will meet with representatives of the league on April 27 to provide an update on where things stand with the potential project in Arlington Heights or Hammond, Indiana.
Per Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears chairman George McCaskey and CEO/president Kevin Warren had a meeting with Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. on Friday at the project site of the potential new stadium.
The Bears didn’t hide their intentions about what the meeting meant.
“The team characterized the gathering as the latest step in due diligence while considering a move across the border to Indiana,” Finley wrote. The meeting, which included other Bears and Hammond officials, took place at Lost Marsh Golf Club near Wolf Lake, where the Bears would build if they decide to move to Indiana.
“A statement issued by a team spokesperson said the Bears ‘continue to work together with Indiana leaders on our commitment to finish the necessary due diligence work for the Hammond site.’”

The Bears’ meeting with Indiana, now publicized to the media, came a day after Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker put public pressure on the legislature to act quickly to pass team-friendly legislation that would aid the Bears in property taxes and support critical infrastructure projects around Arlington Heights.
Pritzker is hoping an answer comes by the end of May.
“(I) would like the legislature to move faster, just because I think that will be good for everybody to get this done,” Pritzker said.
“We have a lot of things on the schedule that need to get done before the end of May, including, importantly, a balanced budget that I put forward, so I’d like to get this done before we ever get to that point.”
Numerous residents of Illinois have expressed to CCS that they’d rather the state not give the Bears tax breaks for a private stadium while they’re struggling to pay their own taxes and bills.
While Illinois is biding its time, the Bears are making proactive moves with Indiana.
