Craig Counsell provides key update on future of injured pitcher
The Chicago Cubs got a much-needed series win earlier this week, taking two of three on the road at Philadelphia. As they welcome in another NL East foe in the New York Mets, manager Craig Counsell provided a key update on the future of an injured pitcher.
In his second start, Cade Horton had to leave his start against the Cleveland Guardians in just the second inning. He reported tightness in his forearm and after an MRI and evaluation, it revealed the worst. Horton would be shut down for the rest of the season and would require surgery. Now, we have a little more context in terms of his return.
When will Cade Horton return?
Ahead of the series against the New York Mets, Counsell met the media and was asked about Horton. There, he delivered the bad news that it’s going to be a long wait to see him back pitching.
Counsell told reporters Horton had his elbow surgery and will be looking at a 15-16 month recovery:

After a promising season last year, Horton was off to a great start in 2026. In 7.1 innings pitched, he posted a 2.45 ERA with four strikeouts and a 1-0 record in those games.
He missed the end of the season last year, including the playoffs, after suffering an arm injury. The hope was that Horton would at the top of the Cubs’ rotation this year and for years to come. Chicago is also awaiting the return of Justin Steele who missed over a year after having surgery early last season.
The Cubs are hoping to get Steele back by the Summer.
