Chicago Sky select Gabriela Jaquez in the 2026 WNBA Draft
The Chicago Sky have made the first of their three selections in the 2026 WNBA Draft. The team has been making some moves to improve its roster in free agency and trades, but selected an NCAA Champion in the first round. With the team getting a massive star with recognition in the draft, let’s take a closer look as to possibly why the Sky made this shocking selection.
The Chicago Sky selected Gabriela Jaquez in the first round of the 2026 WNBA Draft
The Sky have made one of their three draft selections as they held the fifth pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. They received that pick via the Connecticut Sun in a previous trade and selected UCLA Bruins guard Gabriela Jaquez with their pick. This was the first real surprise in the draft, as many of the mock drafts had Jaquez falling a bit later than the fifth selection.
Jaquez is the sister of Miami Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. She was also part of the NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins this season. She played all four years at UCLA and averaged 9.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.8 steals per game with a 50.4/34.1/76.8 shooting split over 145 games.
The Sky has a lot of guard depth to help as a veteran like Skylar Diggins, who can help her take the next step into professional basketball. Chicago has some quality talent entering the regular season in a few weeks, so it will be intriguing to see how she fits into what the Sky want to do as a team going forward.
