Chicago White Sox call up a versatile replacement for Austin Hays
The Chicago White Sox outfield took a hit on Monday when outfielder Austin Hays left the game versus the Baltimore Orioles with a right hamstring strain injury. The former All-Star outfielder was hitting .219 with a .586 OPS and a home run in nine games.

Due to Hays’s hamstring injury, the White Sox placed him on the 10-day injured list ahead of Game 2 versus the Orioles. To take Hays’ spot on the active roster, the White Sox selected the contract of outfielder Dustin Harris from Triple-A Charlotte.
In a corresponding move to add Harris to the 40-man roster, the White Sox also transferred right-hander Mike Vasil (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list.

Dustin Harris brings a quality bat and versatility to the Chicago White Sox
Harris, 26, has prior big league experience, appearing in 21 games for the Texas Rangers in 2024 and 2025 — Harris hit .217 with a .715 OPS and two home runs. Harris was drafted in the 11th round by the Oakland Athletics in 2019 out of St. Petersburg College, and is hitting .250 with a .608 OPS in eight games at Charlotte.
However, the Tampa, Florida native has performed better at Triple-A, batting .285 with a .804 OPS and 11 home runs in 91 games. Harris also brings some versatility to the White Sox, playing all three outfield positions and first base.
Harris’s ability to play first base will help when slugger Munetaka Murakami is the designated hitter. Harris signed with the White Sox as a free agent in December 2025.
