The Chicago White Sox are in a position where they have one of the top hitters in MLB right now with first baseman Munetaka Murakami. After signing him from the NPB this offseason, the slugger has been exceeding any and every expectation. This has had some fans calling for the front office to already extend the 26-year-old to keep him with the team for the future. General manager Chris Getz made it known that there have not been any discussions between the team and Murakami in terms of a contract extension. Murakami signed a two-year, $34 million contract with the White Sox ahead of the 2026 season.
Murakami has been a star in his first month in the majors. Entering April 24, he has a .253/.394/.598 slash line with 10 home runs, 19 RBI, and 19 runs scored across 25 games. He has been able to be a force in the middle of Chicago’s lineup and produce at an elite level at first base.
This does not mean there will not be any discussions in the future, but Chicago has him under contract through the 2027 season. The White Sox have a young team, and Murakami could be a major factor in the future of the White Sox, while players like Kyle Teel and Colson Montgomery are also in the lineup going forward.
Chicago are still a young team that is far from being a major threat in the American League. However, it will be intriguing to see if Murakami can continue to dominate or if pitching will catch up to him.
