The Chicago Cubs have been playing great baseball of late and currently hold a 14-9 record after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.
While all eyes have been on the Major League club, the Cubs have quite a few talented young players coming up in the minors. One of those players is none other than the son of former bitter Chicago rival Mark McGwire’s son.
Mason McGwire was drafted by Chicago in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. As of the time of this writing, he is playing for the Cubs’ Single-A affiliate, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. He has started turning some heads of late with his play to begin the 2026 season.
Most fans will remember the rivalry that McGwire’s dad had with Chicago. Many will remember the home run battle between McGwire and Cubs legend Sammy Sosa. Now, there is a chance that McGwire’s son could work his way up in the organization that his dad used to hate.
Keeping that in mind, let’s dive in and take a look at McGwire’s start to the 2026 campaign.
Mark McGwire’s Son, Mason McGwire, Is Playing Well for the Cubs
McGwire is currently just 22 years old. He has made four appearances this season in the Cubs’ organization and has made one start.
Throughout his first four games of the season, McGwire has compiled a 2-1 record to go along with a 0.90 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, 15 strikeouts, and five walks. He has completed 10 innings of work.
Granted, he is still incredibly young with a lot of development needed to make an appearance in the Majors. However, he has shown signs of being the kind of player who could make that leap. Only time will tell, but the son of a former hated rival has a chance to become an intriguing prospect for Chicago.
Fans may not have even known that McGwire’s son was on the team. Now, he’s going to be a name worth keeping a close eye on throughout the 2026 season. At least for now, he is playing at a very high level for Myrtle Beach.
