Former MLB pitcher believes Chicago Cubs will have to chase this team in NL Central
The 2026 MLB season is just over a week old and while there is a long ways to go until October, we can still learn some things. For the Chicago Cubs, they are the only NL Central team below .500 as they enter Sunday’s double-header at Cleveland with a 3-4 record.
The Cubs struggled with the Washington Nationals before winning a series against the Los Angeles Angels. And while it is early on, there’s been some pitching woes for the team.
Right now, the Milwaukee Brewers lead the division at 6-2 but it’s a log jam behind them. No one is really out of it but the Brewers’ hot start shows they aren’t ready to give it up just yet. And one MLB analyst and former player believes that’s true as well.
Dontrelle Willis believes Milwaukee Brewers are the team to beat in NL Central for Chicago Cubs
Following Saturday’s Kansas City Royals win over the Milwaukee Brewers, former MLB pitcher Dontrelle Willis spoke on the NL Central. Despite the loss, the second of the year for the Brewers, Willis says the NL Central will go through Milwaukee.
“They play clean, they are going to put pressure on the opposition, that’s what they do. They have been consistently getting off to good starts year after year under Pat Murphy. No different this year,” Willis said. “I think the Central is going to have to go through Milwaukee. I’m sorry Cubs fans, but they have something going on up in Milwaukee.”

It’s still very early so it’s hard to make any judgement just yet. The Cubs won’t stay in last place all season long and things should balance out, so there’s no need to panic.
However, it’s hard to envision Milwaukee just giving up the division without a fight. Willis is right in the sense that Murphy is a damn good manager, which will keep the Brewers in this for the long haul.
