Pete Crow-Armstrong leaning on newest teammate for continued growth after $115 million pay day

Chicago Cubs, Cubs news, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman

One month ago, Pete Crow-Armstrong signed a long term contract extension with the Chicago Cubs. The deal will keep him in the Windy City for the next six years and guarantees him $115 million. With that commitment in place, the Cubs are clearly betting on him as a foundational piece of their next competitive core, expecting him to play a central role in shaping their future both offensively and defensively.

Yet the 24-year-old has faced continued adversity early in the season. Crow-Armstrong’s slow start has raised some concerns, particularly given how strong he finished last year, and as a result he’s been moved down to eighth in the batting order after previously serving as a key focal point in the lineup.

How is Crow-Armstrong dealing with this? At The Athletic (subscription required), Patrick Mooney shed some light on where Crow-Armstrong’s head is at and how he is navigating the failure that comes in the sport of baseball compiled with the expectations of a large contract.

It is well known that Crow-Armstrong is a player who wears his emotions on his sleeve.  Mooney writes that the Cubs don’t plan on having him change that, but he is finding comfort from Alex Bregman, who is helping him with the mental side of the game and continuing to be in a good state of mind, despite slumps at the plate.

“I think the next and final thing for me,” Crow-Armstrong said, “is really locking down a good way to process failure… This year, I feel like Breggy’s kind of got me into the right thought process and a state of mind when it comes to me in the box and how i”m supposed to be.”

It wasn’t specified exactly what that process entails, but it was alluded that the two are building a consistent daily routine, putting in the pregame work, and then trusting the results to follow. Right now, both are hoping to turn things around offensively, but it appears as if Crow-Armstrong has a strong foundation in plate to turn things around.

If Crow-Armstrong can lean into Bregman’s approach, the results should eventually follow. The talent has never been in question, it’s simply about finding consistency. With the backing of his organization and guidance from veterans, like Bregman, this stretch may end up being less about the early struggles and more about laying the foundation for the player he’s expected to be.
