Sophie Cunningham overjoyed by Indiana Fever’s unexpected move
The Indiana Fever are gearing up for the 2026 season. They held their media day on April 22 and made their preseason debut three days later against the New York Liberty.
Sophie Cunningham is back to full strength after she appeared in only 30 games last year due to a knee injury. Fans expect her, along with Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, to lead the charge in potentially bringing a championship to the franchise.
The Missouri Tigers product became a free agent after last season. She and the Fever agreed to terms on a one-year deal on April 12, ending speculation about where she would land next.
Cunningham joined Indiana in 2025 after six years with the Phoenix Mercury. The 6-foot-1 guard quickly established herself as a no-nonsense player who always backed her teammates. She also became a fan favorite, and her popularity continues to skyrocket.

WNBA: Sophie Cunningham receives surprise from Indiana Fever
Some Fever players, including Cunningham, participated in interviews for their media team on Monday. She took part in “The Puppy Room Interview” and answered questions about a variety of topics. The star guard also received a surprise as she was introduced to five puppies.
The Fever posted the clip on Instagram.

She giggled as she was handed the puppies one at a time. Cunningham couldn’t contain her joy over the Fever’s unexpected move. She expressed her excitement in the comments section.
“this made me soul so happppppy!!!!” Cunningham wrote.
The 29-year-old showed a different side of herself. She is tough and gritty on the court, but she was soft and affectionate to the puppies in the clip. Fans praised her, and many commented that her laugh was infectious.
On Thursday, Cunningham and the Fever will host the Dallas Wings for another preseason matchup. The team will start its regular season against the Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 9.
