WNBA: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham drew a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons after she signed a contract extension with the Indiana Fever in WNBA free agency.

Cunningham received some serious backlash after she admitted that her new deal with the Fever failed to meet her expectations. It got so bad that the outspoken guard had to go on social media to clarify her comments. According to Cunningham, she wasn’t concerned with the money. The 29-year-old explained that she wanted a longer deal than the one-year contract she had signed.

According to Spotrac, Cunningham signed a single-season deal with the Fever worth $665,000.

Sophie Cunningham sends strong message on Indiana Fever teammates

Despite all the noise, Cunningham remains fully committed to the Fever. The 6-foot-1 guard spoke to the press on Wednesday during the Fever’s media day. Cunningham took the opportunity to sound off on Indiana’s roster heading into the new WNBA season.

“When you have people like Kelsey Mitchell, who is just a dog—like, a dog—you have [Aliyah Boston], you have Caitlin [Clark], and then Lexi [Hull] is playing phenomenal,” Cunningham said. “You have Monique Billings, who is a complete athlete, rim-to-rim, just a great rim protector for us. And then Myisha Hines-Allen—I’m just glad we’re on the same team.

“So I just feel like we’re really stacking our roster.”

Cunningham also threw praise in the direction of rookie Raven Johnson, who the Fever selected 10th overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

“You have young bucks like Raven, a heck of a defender,” Cunningham continued. “And then you have me. … And so I just feel like we’re stacking the pieces, we’re building our training camp brick by brick, and that’s what you’ve got to do.

“We know where we want to be big picture, but it’s super important that you get your daily investments in, and then you’ll get there.”

As Cunningham stated, the Fever are taking it one day at a time. Their preparations are now in full swing at training camp ahead of their preseason slate. Cunningham and Co. make their preseason debut on Saturday against the New York Liberty. This will be followed by exhibition matchups against the Dallas Wings and the Nigerian national squad on April 30 and May 2, respectively.

The Fever will officially start their season on May 9 in a home matchup against the Wings, who will be led by No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd and reigning Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers.
