Breakout White Sox prospect finally putting it all together in Triple-A in 2026
Back in 2023, the Chicago White Sox made infielder Jacob Gonzalez their first round pick, selecting him 15th overall and signing for $3.9 million. At the time, Gonzalez was coming off of a decorated college career at Mississippi, but until 2026, he had been unable to put things together as a professional.
During his first full minor league season, Gonzalez slashed .238/.307/.343 across High-A and Double-A. A year later, in Double-A and Triple-A, his numbers were a similar .232/.307/.345. This year, he is off to a torrid start at .285/.404/.529 with a career high 10 home runs to his name already.
So far, the underlying metrics suggest Gonzalez’s hot start is far from a fluke, with plenty of indicators pointing toward continued offensive production. His breakout campaign has even sparked conversations about a potential MLB debut as soon as this season, though questions still remain about where exactly he would fit defensively at the big league level.

Through 36 games this season, Gonzalez has shown significant improvements in both exit velocity and batting average on balls in play (BABIP). His exit velocity has climbed roughly four percent compared to last year, leading to a noticeable jump in hard-hit rate and more consistent quality contact. The result has been a surge in production, highlighted by a .322 BABIP after failing to eclipse the .300 mark in previous seasons.
While the club could certainly use an offensive spark in the outfield, Gonzalez has never played the position, and top prospect Braden Montgomery also appears to be closing in on his MLB debut after recently earning a promotion to Triple-A. For now, the best path may be keeping Gonzalez in the minors where he can continue receiving everyday at-bats, but if an opportunity opens up, he should be among the first players considered for a promotion.
