Chicago Bears admit mistake with Dayo Odeyingbo; big DL position change
Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is on a mission this offseason.
During his news conference on Saturday, Allen said he focused too much on scheme and not enough on teaching pass-rushing techniques last season. The Bears plan to go back to the fundamentals in an effort to get the defensive line to affect the quarterback.
Allen believes the Bears will have to work with the roster they have up front instead of adding an elite defensive end or tackle via trade or free agency this offseason.
Chicago is looking for someone to take the defensive end spot opposite of Montez Sweat. Last season, the Bears gave Dayo Odeyingbo a three-year deal worth $48 million to occupy that spot.
It was considered one of the worst signings in free agency last year, and Odeyingbo didn’t help matters when he told reporters that he wasn’t focused on getting sacks.
“Everybody wants more sacks, but there are other ways to affect the quarterback,” Odeyingbo said. “I’m sure Coach Johnson would rather see a forced interception than a sack, but that doesn’t show up in the stat sheet.”
Odeyingbo didn’t do much of the above, recording 21 tackles and one sack in eight games before suffering a torn Achilles in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Per Pro Football Focus, he was ranked 112 out of 115 edges for creating just 10 pressures last season.

Even with Allen prepared to teach his defensive ends how to get to the passer this year, the Bears don’t seem to believe Odeyingbo will get a hang of the skillet.
Per Cortney Cronin of ESPN, Allen told reporters that Odeyingbo is “definitely in the mix at defensive end” this offseason. However, the Bears want to use his skills as a run defender for running downs and potentially move him inside for passing downs.
In NFL speak, that the Bears admitting it was a mistake to sign Odeyingbo to help with the pass rush.
In addition to switching up Odeyingbo’s role, the Bears plan to try out second-year defensive lineman Shemar Turner at defensive end. The six-foot-three, 293-pound athlete was drafted as a defensive tackle, and played that position until he suffered a season-ending torn ACL against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8.
Turner, a second-round pick last year, recorded six tackles in five games played last season.
Per the Bears website, Turner is still listed at 293 pounds. That’s quite a weight for a defensive end to be rushing the passer.
