Bulls linked to dangerous $197 million trade after NBA Draft lottery fortune

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls ended up moving all the way up to the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after some extreme luck in the draft lottery on Sunday, which could very well provide the Bulls with the ability to select North Carolina Tar Heels star Caleb Wilson.

Wilson seems to fit exactly what new top executive Bryson Graham wants out of a player given that he is long, athletic and has tremendous two-way potential. The UNC product has even drawn comparisons to Kevin Garnett, so it seems like a slam-dunk pick for Chicago.

Or perhaps the Bulls would prefer to trade out of the pick?

Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey proposed trade scenarios for each lottery selection, and for Chicago, he has the Bulls sending the No. 4 selection, Patrick Williams, Isaac Okoro and Rob Dillingham to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Ja Morant and the third overall pick.

Would the Chicago Bulls trade for Ja Morant?

Why would the Grizzlies move down a spot in the draft and also trade Morant, you ask?

Well, because Morant has two years remaining on his $197 million contract and is slated to make $42.1 million next season and $44.9 million in 2026-27. Surely, Memphis would love to get out from under that deal, and moving down from No. 3 may be the way to do it.

Why would the Bulls agree to this trade, though? Bailey explained.

“For the Bulls, Morant really doesn’t make any sense for the team’s short- or long-term prospects, but he’s worth a shot for three players who also don’t figure to be part of the future,” Bailey wrote. “And if he plays well enough to rehab his trade value a bit, Chicago could possibly move him in a subsequent deal and get even more back.”

The problem is that Morant is pretty radioactive at this point of his career.

Injuries and suspensions have limited him to a grand total of 79 games over the las three seasons, and when he has actually been on the floor, he has barely even been a shell of the player he once was during his first few years in the NBA.

The Bulls would probably be perfectly comfortable staying at No. 4 and selecting Wilson, assuming that AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer are the top three selections, in some order. Dybantsa will likely go No. 1 overall to the Washington Wizards, and Wilson seems to be a better fit in Chicago than both Peterson and Boozer.

So unless the Grizzlies are threatening to take Wilson, there really would be no need for the Bulls to trade up and take on Morant’s albatross contract.
