Chicago White Sox jump into top-20 of latest MLB power rankings

The Chicago White Sox are 19-21 and just one game out of first place in the woeful American League Central Division. Over the weekend, they took two out of three games from the Seattle Mariners, who have a similar record. It was Chicago’s third series win of their last four, a run that has propelled them onto the national scene.

Of course, Munetaka Murakami and his 15 home runs are big reason for the attention they are getting. However, his consistent play at the plate has proven to be infectious, and multiple White Sox players are starting to gain recognition around baseball.

The Chicago White Sox rank 19th in latest MLB power rankings

Last week, Bleacher Report had the White Sox ranked as the 21st-best team in baseball. This itself was significant as early power rankings had Chicago ranked last or second-to-last for the first few weeks of the season.

This week, though, the White Sox have climbed up to 19th:

“It took the White Sox 61 games before they reached 19 wins last season, so this has not only been a more entertaining team to watch, but a more successful one by a wide margin. With two more long balls last week, Munetaka Murakami is up to 15 home runs on the year, one behind Aaron Judge for the AL lead.”

So far this year, Murakami is hitting .236/.364/.556 with 15 home runs and 29 RBI. Clearly, the team could do a better job of getting runners on in front of him, but his power is a big reason for their improvement so far in 2026.

Murakami leads the American League with 60 strikeouts, but has also walked 30 times. A true three-outcome hitter, the Japanese star is not going to hit for a high average, but his performance so far as just about every other MLB team regretting their decision not to pursue him themselves.
