Chicago Bears: ‘Wrench’ thrown into Arlington Heights hope via Illinois Senate
The Chicago Bears met with the NFL Stadium Council this week to give progress on where the team stands this spring on their two potential projects in Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana.

The council wants the Bears to move “expeditiously” to decide between the site at Arlington Heights or Northwest Indiana. The Bears are set to meet with the council in the next two weeks.
Amid the new deadline with the council, the Illinois Senate has been in no hurry to pass the megaprojects legislation that the House passed in April. The Bears wanted amendments added to the legislation that would provide the team with property tax relief.

Per Justin Laurence of Crain’s Chicago Business, the bill as is has thrown a “wrench in negotiations” between the Bears and state lawmakers.
“The property tax relief mechanism included in the House megaproject bill has thrown a wrench in negotiations as the Senate wants to keep some form of tax relief, but the current mechanism is opposed by the Bears,” Laurence posted on X.
“But there’s no easy answer to keep property tax relief in the bill if the House’s set aside is taken out — and reaching a compromise is ‘exactly why we didn’t run a bill this week,’ Sen Bill Cunningham told Crain’s.”
The spring legislative session will conclude at the end of May. So a compromise will be needed rather quickly if the Bears hope to get the ball rolling for Arlington Heights.
Even before the end of business in Springfield, the Bears will meet with the stadium council, already impatient with the process.
It remains to be seen if the Bears or Illinois will blink first. With a move to Indiana as a real possibility, the Senate could budge in the coming weeks.
But that could be too late.
