Chicago Cubs fall 2 spots in latest power rankings after rough week

The Chicago Cubs are 29-18 and lead the National League Central Division. However, they lost each of their two series last week and suddenly see the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals sitting just 1.5 games back of them. Heading into this week, the Cubs have a chance to separate themselves again, as they welcome the Brewers to Wrigley Field for the first time this year.

This all being said, Chicago needs to get things right quickly as the competition they face is only going to get better. Sure, they have won 10 games in a row twice already this year, but the teams they beat were not exactly among MLB’s best.

The Chicago Cubs maintain top-5 spot in latest power rankings

Every Monday, Bleacher Report releases their weekly MLB power rankings. Last week, Chicago was ranked as the third-best team in baseball. Following their series losses to the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox this past week, though, they dropped two spots to fifth:

“The Cubs have lost three straight series since rattling off their second 10-game winning streak of the year, and they scored just five runs in three games against the Braves. They still lead the majors with 19 wins over teams with a winning record, but will need to steer out of their current skid quickly as they welcome the Brewers to town starting Monday.”

Chicago certainly will have their work cut out for them against Milwaukee this week. After Brandon Sproat pitches on Monday, the Cubs will have to face Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison, both of whom have ERA’s under 2.13.

It would really help if Pete Crow-Armstrong could finally get his bat going consistently. Currently, he is hitting .234/.314/.374 with five home runs, 20 RBI, and 12 stolen bases. His elite defense justifies having him in the lineup every day, but he if he continues to be a liability at the plate, teams will be quick to take advantage of that.
