Chicago Cubs get long-awaited positive news on injured All-Star starting pitcher

Chicago Cubs, Matthew Boyd

The Chicago Cubs have quickly put the negativity of their 10-game losing streak behind them. After dropping the first two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates this week, Chicago defeated that same team two times in a row on Wednesday and Thursday.

Additionally, the Cubs climbed up from last place in the National League Central Division all the way up to second. Currently, they sit four games behind the Milwaukee Brewers, who have won three games in a row, having just swept the St. Louis Cardinals.

Throughout the course of their losing streak, the Cubs were obviously missing some quality starting pitching depth. Fortunately, one of their starters is nearing return.

Matthew Boyd could rejoin the Chicago Cubs next week

The Cubs have had some awful luck in terms of their starting pitching depth. Justin Steele started the year on the injured list and suffered a set-back in his rehab. Cade Horton is out for the rest of the season and probably part of next year (if there is a season) due to requiring Tommy John surgery.

Edward Cabrera was the latest to end to the IL with a blister. Meanwhile, Matthew Boyd has had to go on the injured list twice.

The first time Boyd, who was Chicago’s Opening Day starter, went on the IL was in early April due to a bicep strain. Then, earlier this month, he suffered a fluke knee injury when playing with his kids at home. The result was a torn meniscus and he needed surgery to repair it.

According to The Chicago Sun Times, Boyd is close to a return:

“Left-hander Matthew Boyd, who has been out since May 4 after having arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, is scheduled to make a rehab start Sunday at Triple-A Iowa.

“Boyd will be checked out Monday, but if all goes well, he could return to the Cubs’ rotation in time for the series against the Giants next weekend at Wrigley Field. In his last start for the Cubs, Boyd gave up two runs and four hits in six innings and was the winning pitcher in an 8-4 victory against the Diamondbacks at Wrigley.”

In five starts this year, Boyd is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA.
