Chicago Cubs’ Michael Busch’s struggles seem to be in the past
Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch has not been the same level of player this season as he was last year. In 53 games this season, Busch has hit .230 with a .750 OPS and six home runs, the opposite of last year, when he hit .261 with a .866 OPS and 34 home runs in 155 games.
The good thing for Busch and the Cubs is that it appears the 28-year-old is starting to come out of his rut. Busch has had an outstanding May compared to April. In 96 at-bats in April, Busch batted .188 with a .553 OPS, two home runs and 28 strikeouts, whereas in 77 at-bats so far this May, Busch has batted .286 with a .998 OPS and four home runs.

This resurgence by Busch is a good sign, as the Cubs, too, are in the midst of a rough patch, losing nine straight games.
Chicago Cubs Michael Busch is seemingly putting his early-season struggles in the “rear-view mirror”
According to MLB.com’s Brian Murphy, Busch was listed as one of 10 hitters whose early-season struggles need to be put in the “rear-view mirror.” Murphy listed Busch’s strong performance in May as well as ranking third in hard-hit rate (61.1%) and second in barrel rate (20.4%).
“Busch had to be feeling good about himself after his three-hit showing on Opening Day against the Nationals,” wrote Murphy. “Unfortunately, he would collect the same number of hits over his next 13 games and 47 at-bats. He started to heat up in the back half of April but still ended the season’s first full month with a lackluster 71 wRC+. In May, Busch has a 179 wRC+, sixth-best among qualified batters. That includes his game on Monday, when he drilled a solo homer to center field for Chicago’s only run against the Pirates. Heading into Memorial Day, Busch ranked third in hard-hit rate (61.1%) and second in barrel rate (20.4%) among all hitters with at least 50 batted balls this month.”
With Busch slowly starting to figure out his struggles at the plate, the Cubs also need center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to get out of the slump he’s in. Crow-Armstrong is batting .223 with a .674 OPS in 54 games.
