Chicago Cubs Nico Hoerner is considered a favorite for NL MVP
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner is a player in the National League and Major League Baseball who quietly produces. At the plate, Hoerner is a career .283 hitter with a .729 OPS and 779 hits.
A two-time Gold Glove winner (2023 and 2025), Hoerner finished 19th in the MVP voting last season, but has not been named to an All-Star team in his eight seasons in The Show.
This season has proven to be no different for Hoerner. In 34 games, Hoerner is hitting .299 with a .829 OPS (highest of his career) with 10 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI. Hoerner has also been his usual self on defense, posting 18 defensive runs saved in 267.0 innings at second base this season.

Hoerner’s early success this season, especially after signing his extension (six years, $141 million), has put him in the conversation to win the National League MVP award.

With Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani ranked as the favorite in a recent poll of over 40 MLB.com experts (28 first-place votes), Hoerner ranked fifth to win the award. MLB.com’s Jason Foster notes that Hoerner is a “well-rounded player,” which is helping his chances to dethrone Ohtani.
“Hoerner’s one of those players whose traditional stats don’t scream “MVP,” but the infielder has certainly been of tremendous value to the Cubs as one of the most well-rounded but underrated players in the game,” wrote Foster. “The two-time Gold Glove winner received MVP votes last season (he finished 19th in the voting) when he was worth 6.2 bWAR. He’s on track for that kind of value again this season, with a .301/.375/.466 slash line entering Monday, along with seven Outs Above Average, which ranks fourth among all position players.”
Hoerner certainly has a chance to receive votes this season, but taking down Ohtani may be a tall task to tackle, given he pitches. In 30.0 innings this season (five starts), Ohtani is 2-1 with a 0.60 ERA and struck out 34. Even though it is unlikely Hoerner will win the MVP award, he is putting himself in line to receive votes to be the starting second baseman in the All-Star game in Philadelphia this summer.
