Chicago White Sox clearly duped AL rival with laughable trade

The Chicago White Sox have been one of baseball’s most pleasant surprises this season, as they find themselves right in the thick of the AL Central race, and they have given no indication that they will be falling out of it.

In fact, the White Sox have been achieving this without some of their most important players, as catcher Kyle Teel has not yet played this season due to a hamstring injury he suffered in the World Baseball Classic, and both Everson Pereira and Austin Hays are on the injured list, as well.

Now, about Pereira.

The 25-year-old has been slashing .250/.310/.453 with three home runs and seven RBI over 71 plate appearances before going down with a right pectoral strain. While there is no definitive timetable for his return (he last played on April 28), you have to figure he’ll be back sometime within the next few weeks.

When Pereira does get back on the field, you can bet that Chicago will find a way to get his talented bat into the lineup, and in the process, the White Sox will surely be laughing at the Tampa Bay Rays thanks to their offseason trade.

Back in November, Chicago sent pitchers Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Wilson to the Rays in exchange for Pereira and utility man Tanner Murray, the latter of whom will be out for the majority of the campaign due to a fractured shoulder.

Tampa Bay made the trade hoping that Gomez and Wilson would bolster its bullpen, but it has ended in disaster for the Rays.

Gomez was so terrible in his nine appearances that Tampa Bay waived him, and Wilson is on the 60-day injured list as a result of lumbar disc inflammation.

So essentially, the Rays gave up an incredibly gifted young hitter in Pereira — whom they had just acquired from the New York Yankees at last year’s trade deadline — for a pitcher they dumped and another arm that hasn’t even taken the mound for them.

Yeah, it’s safe to say that the White Sox won this trade, snatching a former top-100 prospect in Pereira who has not quite gotten the chance to flash his ability yet.

Pereira isn’t a very good defensive outfielder, but he mashed to the tune of an .859 OPS in the Yankees’ minor-league system, exhibiting good power and terrific plate discipline. He could end up becoming a force in Chicago’s lineup, and it all came at the cost of two marginal pitchers.
