Gavin Sheets’ jab at Chicago White Sox falls completely flat
Back in 2017, the Chicago White Sox used their top two draft selections on Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets, hoping both would anchor their future corner infield production. However, neither player ultimately developed into long-term solutions in Chicago.
Burger, the club’s first-round pick that year, was later traded and has since spent time with the Miami Marlins and Texas Rangers. Sheets, meanwhile, was given multiple opportunities, including stints in the outfield, as the White Sox attempted to maximize his role, but he was non-tendered following the 2024 season and signed with the San Diego Padres, where he currently plays.
With the White Sox and Padres currently wrapping up a three-game series in San Diego, with Chicago taking the first two matchups, Sheets made some notable comments about his former organization. In what appeared to be a major jab at the White Sox, Sheets referenced his time in Chicago, but the remark ultimately failed to gain much traction and largely fell flat.

Speaking with reporters, Sheets was asked about his time with, and eventual release from, the White Sox. With a slight smirk, he reflected on the move, saying, “It’s one of the best things to happen to my career… as far as I’m concerned, they did me a big favor.”

During his four big league seasons with the Chicago, Sheets posted a -2.9 WAR and a 90 OPS+. Since moving to San Diego last year, he produced a more productive 0.7 WAR and a 105 OPS+ while also setting a career high with 19 home runs and contributing to a Wild Card playoff team, making it easy to understand why he’s embraced his new situation in San Diego.
Still, given his struggles with the White Sox, paired with the noticeable improvement and stronger clubhouse chemistry of this year’s Chicago squad, fans haven’t taken much offense to his comments. Instead, there’s more of a sense of moving on and confidence in the current group, rather than lingering frustration over a former prospect who never quite lived up to expectations.
