Latest Jaxon Wiggins update will make Chicago Cubs fans uneasy
Chicago Cubs top prospect Jaxon Wiggins is currently on the shelf due to elbow inflammation, an injury that surfaced after his second minor-league outing of the season on April 4.
The injury did not appear to be too serious, as it looks like Wiggins will avoid surgery. He is currently rehabbing, and while there is no exact timetable for his return, the hope is that Wiggins could retake the mound at some point in June.
Whether or not that actually holds, however, remains to be seen.
We have received some updates on Wiggins’ progress since getting injured, and most recently, the right-hander was scheduled to throw a live batting practice session this past weekend as he slowly works his way back.
However, a recent update from Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic may have Cubs fans feeling a bit unsettled.
Latest update on Chicago Cubs pitcher Jaxon Wiggins is rather cryptic

Sharma received a question in a mailbag asking about Wiggins’ status, and his answer was rather murky.
“Wiggins was supposed to throw a live BP over the weekend, and the latest I’ve heard is that he’s currently building back up,” Sharma wrote. “The Cubs are intentionally being very careful about this process to try to keep him as healthy as possible. Can they actually do that? Well, see above — it’s not easy.”
He was supposed to throw a live BP? Did he actually throw it? And what does he’s “currently building back up” actually entail? Considering Wiggins is rehabbing, you would hope that he is building himself back up, right?
Sharma’s conclusion is not exactly encouraging either, but that’s surely partially due to the fact that Chicago has been actually ravaged by injuries to its pitching staff. Cade Horton is out for the season, Matthew Boyd is on the IL due to a torn meniscus and Justin Steele had a setback in his own rehab.
Wiggins is the top-ranked prospect in the Cubs’ system. Last season, he made 19 appearances and 18 starts between Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A, logging a 2.77 ERA while allowing just 44 hits and racking up 97 strikeouts over 78 innings of work. The 36 walks were a bit concerning, but the stuff is obviously there.
In two starts at Triple-A before going down this year, Wiggins had posted a 5.63 ERA and a 1.500 WHIP.
Hopefully, the 24-year-old is able to return to the mound with no issues.
