Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

The Indiana Fever are considered one of the title contenders this WNBA season. However, they are off to a rough start after their opening-day loss against the Dallas Wings.

Despite the defeat, it was still a close game for the Fever as they only lost by three points, 107-104. Head Coach Stephanie White had plenty of production from her star players. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get the victory.

As for White and her team, they are now looking towards the next game. The 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year already had some talking points for her squad and what they need to do to improve.

Stephanie White pinpoints Indiana Fever’s weaknesses

Despite the loss, the Fever put up a good effort by scoring 104 points. However, Coach White still spoke up about the improvement points for her squad.

White discussed the Fever’s offense and how they can work through it as they head to L.A. to face the Los Angeles Sparks.

“I liked our pace, I thought our pace was really good,” White said on Monday. “We played fast, we got some open looks. We still got to be better in terms of our ball movement and player movement.”

Indiana had 23 assists and 14 turnovers in their game against Dallas. Even if they reached the 100-point mark, White said they’re still at the “infancy level” in terms of playing together.

“When you score 104 points, you’ve got to win the game,” White reiterated. “We gave up 107, so we need to focus on our defense.”

The veteran coach then went on to identify her team’s biggest shortcomings.

“We’ve got to be better at getting matched up in transition,” the Fever coach said. “getting back in transition, and not giving up so many easy looks.

“… Ball screen defense. Those are two areas that were glaring weaknesses in Game 1, and so we’re going to continue to work on that.”

The Fever’s defense will be put to the test on Wednesday. They will need to try to hold down the Sparks’ dyanmic star guard Kelsey Plum, who went off for 27 points in L.A.’s season-opening loss to the Las Vegas Aces.
