NASCAR targeting return to Chicago for street race in 2027
After three years of the street race in Chicago, NASCAR took a break and opted to return to Joliet for a race on Fourth of July weekend. But the hiatus of the street race might not last for long.
On Wednesday, a report from The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi suggests that NASCAR is looking to bring the street race back to the Windy City:
NASCAR is making progress toward bringing back a race in downtown Chicago for its premier Cup Series, according to multiple industry sources briefed on the discussions but not authorized to speak publicly.
There is no finalized deal between the league and the city yet, but those sources say there is growing optimism that the Chicago Street Course will be included in NASCAR’s 2027 schedule.
While racing is back in the Chicagoland, the street race was a fun event downtown that really showcased the beauty of the Chicago Skyline.

For three years from 2023-25, drivers raced the track near Grant Park. Despite rain in two of those years, the race was actually a success and enjoyable for fans. But last July, NASCAR announced it would not be back in 2026 and instead targeted 2027 as a potential return.
If it does return, Bianchi is reporting that the event will move off of its Fourth of July weekend date.
Previously hosted over the Fourth of July weekend, the race will likely move, industry sources say, though it’s not yet clear to what date. Holding the race near the holiday is something the city wants to avoid, since the track build requires shutting down city streets for varying periods.
Chicago hosting a street race plus the potential of the Joliet race gives fans in Northern Illinois two more chances to see NASCAR races. That certainly feels like a big win for the sport in terms of trying to grow it.
