Former Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant blasted for awful contract

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Chicago Cubs, Kris Bryant

Back in the mid-2010’s, it appeared as if former Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was on his way to being one of the premier stars in Major League Baseball. In 2015, he was named the NL Rookie of the Year while hitting .275/.369/.488 with 26 home runs and 99 RBI. The following year, he was the NL MVP after hitting .292/.385/.554 with 39 home runs and 102 RBI.

In seven seasons with Chicago, Bryant hit .279/.378/.508 and made five All-Star teams. Since leaving the Cubs, though, he has struggled to stay on the field. So much so that his massive contract is now considered among the worst in professional sports.

Back in 2022, Bryant signed a seven-year $182 million contract with the Colorado Rockies. Entering the fifth year of the deal, he has appeared in just 170 games and has hit just .244/.324/.370 with 17 home runs and 61 RBI.

In April, Bryant was diagnosed with chronic lumbar degenerative disk disease and placed on the 60-day IL. He has not appeared in a game this season and may not ever be able to play again. For these reasons, FanSided recently ranked his contract with the Rockies as one of the worst in baseball:

“Kris Bryant’s contract might be the worst in the majors right now, given the fact that he hasn’t played a game this season and there’s a non-zero chance he’ll never play another MLB game. When it comes to being the most untradeable, though, I wouldn’t go that far because of the length.

“As bad as this contract is, Bryant is only under contract through the 2028 season. Even if Bryant doesn’t retire before then, therefore taking his contract off the books, the length isn’t such a deal breaker that if the Colorado Rockies were to be eager enough to attach a prospect to get his contract off the books, they might actually be able to do so. It’s a bad contract, but not the most untradeable.”

It truly is too bad that Bryant’s career has been decimated by injuries as he has gotten older. What was once a promising career has been derailed. Hopefully, he can at least recover to the point where the rest of his life is not affected too much.
